Obituary for John David (Jack) Smith : May 23,1950 to October 21, 2024

John David Smith (Jack) passed away on Monday, October 21, 2024 at Carson Tahoe Medical Center in Carson City.  He was 74.

Jack (John David) Smith was born May 23, 1950 in Turlock, California. His parents were John Edward and Marjorie Ruth (Schendel) Smith. He was a graduate of Turlock High School, class of 1968.

He moved to Yerington, Nevada in 1969, where Nevada stole his heart and never wanted to leave. He first worked for Bob and Nancy Smith at their store Blooming Things and then went to work for the local fuel and heating oil distribution business for 20 years. From there, he moved to the Public Works department for the City of Yerington until his retirement in August of 2014.

Jack LOVED to hunt anything with wings (especially chukar), enjoyed training his own bird dogs, and he got some deer, wild pig and antelope along the way. He was an avid trap shooter. He was one of the Charter members who founded the Mason Valley Trap club in August 1975. In 1982 and 1995-1998 he was club president.  He also won many club championships throughout the years. In 1981, he was the Nevada State Dan Orlich Handicap Champion. In 1987, he was a founding member of the Mason Valley Skeet Club. Jack then turned his sights towards sporting clays and five stand. In the off seasons, he enjoyed camping and fishing with his family, creating many happy memories at Twin Lakes. We will miss his smile, laughs, stories and especially very famous hugs.

He is survived by his wife Gay Lynn Smith (married 47 years, 11 months and 1 day), son David Smith, daughter-in-law Anna Maria Smith, grandsons Raylynd and Jaxon Smith, his mother Marjorie Smith, his sister Vickie Corgiat and brothers-in-law Chuck Corgiat and Leon Mills, many nieces and nephews, cousins,  friends and neighbors.

Per his wishes there will be no service. If desired, contributions can be made to Community United Methodist Church, God’s Pantry, PO Box 109, Yerington, NV 89447.  Family and friends are also invited to sign his online guest book at www.FRFH.net

Arrangements and cremation are under the direction of Freitas Ruprcht Funeral Home, 25 Hwy 208 Yerington, Nevada 89447 (775) 463-2911
