Silver State Youth Livestock Show & Sale Announces Expanded Dates for 2023
By Kris Homan, SSYLS Publications Relations Coordinator
The Management Group of Silver State Livestock Show (SSYLS), with the approval of the Lyon County Fair Board, is excited to announce some BIG changes to the Silver State Livestock Show (SSYLS) which is slated for August 17-20, 2023 as an event of the Lyon County Fair & Rodeo.
The livestock show will be lengthened by one-full day, with a Start date of Thursday, August 17th as check-in day. This will enable contestants to have a bit more time between shows along with the ability to begin the activities on Sunday earlier, and then conclude the show in a timelier fashion.
The show will begin on Thursday, August 17, 2023, and conclude on Sunday, August 20, 2023. The major change will be that all animals (with the exception of rabbits and poultry) must be checked in on Thursday instead of on Friday as was done in the past. Check-in will begin on Thursday, August 17, 2023, at 10 am and will be open until 7 pm.
On Thursday evening the show will begin at 5:00 pm with dairy cattle quality and showmanship and beef market, showmanship, and breeding show.
One very important change is the addition of ‘Online Entries ‘ with the Show Works Fair Management System. We tentatively plan to start taking online entries and payments on July 1, 2023. We believe that this program will increase the accuracy and efficiency of creating data files, class placement, and exhibitor correspondence.
Another change slated for this year is the ability for the rabbit and poultry animals to be checked in on either Thursday or Saturday. The closure of the Poultry and Rabbit barn is another change and will close at 7:00 pm instead of 8:00 pm as in previous years.
Friday the show will begin at 8:00 am with swine in Ring I and Dairy Goats in Ring II. They will be followed by Market Sheep, Market Goats, Sheep Showmanship, and Meat goat showmanship. Market animal pictures will also be taken during the day on Friday.
Saturday will bring all of the Rabbit, poultry, and breeding livestock shows. Friday will conclude with the Master showmanship contest being held at 5:00 pm.
Sunday will hold the Buyer’s lunch, scholarship & buckle presentation ceremony, and conclude with the Silver State Market Livestock Auction beginning at 12:00 pm.
We are proud to continue to build our show and make changes to enable it to grow and accommodate more animals in the process. Our show is an open youth show and proudly welcomes contestants age 5 to 18 from Nevada, Utah, California, Idaho, or any other area in the country. SSYLS continues to accept exhibitors from FFA, Grange, 4-H, and Independents.
We cannot wait to see you all here and we look forwards to working with you!
