In 2015, Walker Basin Conservancy was established as a nonprofit to administer the Walker Basin Restoration Program. As of summer 2021, the Walker Basin Conservancy has acquired approximately 53% of the water necessary to restore Walker Lake to the primary restoration goal of 12,000 mg/L TDS (milligrams per liter, Total Dissolved Solids). The Conservancy is responsible for the stewardship of over 15,000 acres of land that was primarily used for agricultural purposes.
Walker Basin Conservancy’s restoration goal is to increase natural flows in the Walker River to restore and maintain Walker Lake to a long-term goal where indicator species (native fish, waterbirds and invertebrates) will once again be abundant in Walker Lake.
Stewardship activities balance agricultural interests, cultural activities, wildlife habitat, and recreational use, while providing for landscape stabilization.
The Walker Basin Conservancy is actively recruiting for a Nursery Manager at the Yerington Field Office located at 1 Hwy 95A East in Yerington. Please see the full position description below.
